Cowboy Boots

Introduction

This article is a collection of information about Cowboy Boots, where their design came from, what benefits Cowboys get from them and how to find the right pair of cowboy boots for you.

Cowboy Boot - Design

Long Boot Shaft.

Cowboy boots typically feature a mid-calf, to almost knee high shaft. The shaft serves several practical purposes

  • Holds the boot on the cowboys foot, without needing lacing.
  • Cowboy boot shaft has a loose fit, if the cowboy fell off of the horse and got his foot caught in the stirrup, he would be able to pull his foot from the boot, avoiding severe injury while being dragged by the horse.
  • The shaft of the boot protects the lower leg and ankle from rubbing against stirrups.
  • While on foot, the Cowboy boots protect the Cowboy from snakes
  • Offers good ankle support while walking on rough terrain.
  • Allows the Cowboy to walk in mud or shallow water.

Cowboy Heel.

The traditional cowboy boot heel is sometimes known as a "cuban heel". Usually this is quite a high heel that would decrease the chances of the cowboys foot slipping through the stirrups while riding on rough terrain.

Smooth treadless sole

A smooth tradless sole on a cowboy boot allows the cowboy to slip his foot into the stirrup with ease, making for a quick getaway should the need arise!

Pointed Toe

Again, the pointed toe made it easier for the cowboy to direct his foot into the stirrup.
